Our Founder
Scott Maitland is a pioneer in the NC alcohol industry. While in law school, he helped create the NC brewpub industry by starting Top of the Hill Restaurant & Brewery in 1996. Top of the Hill was the first microbrewery east of the Mississippi River to put micro-brewed beer in cans in 2004. He created the first locally sourced, organic distillery in the South in 2010.
All along the way, Scott used his legal background and connections to help pass favorable laws and regulations for the nascent alcohol industry in North Carolina. From the fight to expand brewery self-distribution limits in the 1990’s; to the pop the cap (allowing beer above 6%) movement in the 2000’s; to the carve out of distillery sales from the ABC system from 2015 to 2019, Scott has played a critical role both drafting and lobbying for laws in Raleigh.
Concerned that the political avenue has run its course when it comes to fighting the vestiges of Blue Laws, Scott has founded CCRAFT to continue to fight for the rights of North Carolinians via the legal system.
